When you look at donuts, one of the first things you see is that they have a special shape; this shape makes them easy to eat and provides stability as you hold them by the hole in the middle. But if you do not have a donut pan, you don’t need it to make homemade donuts! This step-by-step guide will show you how to make donuts without a donut pan.

Here’re some of the ingredients you may need to make doughnuts from a muffin pan:
- Aluminum foil
- Cooking spray
- Muffin pan
Over one of your fingers, place a square piece of aluminum foil. To cover each muffin cup in a muffin tin, it must be large enough. The best size for me seemed to be a 5″x5″ square.
To create a mold, gently fold the sides of the foil up around your finger. Next, put the lid on your muffin tin and press the filling into the cup. You will need to repeat this procedure for each cup. My time to create the foil inserts for the recipe below was approximately 15 minutes.
Donut Pans You Can Make
- Have you ever wanted to make donuts but did not have a donut pan? That’s fine!
- Tinfoil and a cupcake pan are all you need!
- Wrap the foil around your middle finger by cutting the square into four equal pieces.
- Put the shape that remains in the muffin tin after you remove your finger.
- You’ll be left with a perfectly shaped donut hole tin that will yield round baked donuts. See how well this tray works with my Chocolate Cake Donuts.
Making Doughnuts Without the Use of a Doughnut Pan
Any baked doughnut recipe will work with this DIY doughnut pan. To conduct this experiment, I followed a recipe for mini apple cider doughnuts. They’re soft, fluffy, and perfect for an afternoon snack or a breakfast treat!
- 1/2 cup sugar
- One teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1-1/2 cups apple cider
- 1-1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- Two tablespoons unsweetened dairy-free milk
- Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting
- Two tablespoons vegan butter, melted
Step 1: Reduce the apple cider
Bring apple cider to a boil with a small saucepan on medium heat. Reduce the heat once it begins to boil, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Now take the mixture off the heat and let it cool until it is about 1/2 cup.
Step 2: Make the batter
Baking powder, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and baking powder in a large bowl. Add the vegan butter and milk, as well as the reduced apple cider. Ensure that you don’t overmix the ingredients as you stir them together.
Step 3: Pour doughnut batter into homemade doughnut pan
Make sure the foil inserts are also greased before putting the doughnut pan in the oven. Place a circular portion of batter in the prepared pan, filling it about 3/4 of the way.
Step 4: Bake the doughnuts
While the 10 minutes of baking, bake doughnuts at 350° F. Once the tortilla is cooked, flip it onto the cooling rack to let it cool completely.
Step 5: Decorate the doughnuts
Sprinkle a powdered sugar dusting over the cooled doughnuts and enjoy warm.
How Well Does This Work?
Aluminum foil and a muffin pan can be used to make a doughnut pan. We enjoyed the fluffy, moist, and delicious doughnuts. You won’t find them uniformly shaped or as big as a standard doughnut, but the taste will be different.
